Moose Mountain is one of the closest climbing area to Calgary and offers the closest option to year round rock climbing in the Rockies. A South facing sun trap, with good protection from winds, can be climbed comfortably at 0' Celcius on a sunny day.

Utilizing a bike (with studs in the winter) to access the sectors reducing the approach time but the walk is fine. The road is maintained year-round to provide access to the gas plant and other facilities in the canyon. If you do find the gate just beyond the parking lot open be aware that you could get locked in if you decided to pass the gate in a vehicle.

Moose Mountain has an extensive history and at one point it was the personal training grounds for the late Lawrence Ostrander. Larry had many of the sectors equipped with anchors and a cable system that allowed him to move his toprope system form line to line and run laps on the steep terrain. There is still remnants of Larry's equipment but non of the aged gear should be trusted and avoid unpublished routes as the bolts may just be directionals for Larry's set-up. A plaque stands in dedication to Larry and his vision of the canyon on the left hand side of the road as you enter the valley.

Development continues at a rapid pace as miles of untouched rock is been explored.

Thanks to both Andy Genereux and Ross Suchy for their contributions to the development of Moose and their content in the Sloper App.
