The Cathedral Spires run northeast from Taylor Peak for nearly a mile to terminate in a massive buttress
called Cathedral Wall. The imposing 900-foot east face dominates the view across The Loch,
and towers massively above the trees as one draws near on the approach. There are actually four
buttresses, numbered from left to right. The Third Buttress, with its nearly vertical south prow and
dark east face is the main attraction. The routes are big and compelling, but are characterized by
somewhat vague navigation and sparse protection. Your chances of waiting in line to start a climb
here are pretty slim.
Approach: Begin from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead. Take the Lochvale Trail (p272) and continue
past the junction with the Andrews Glacier Trail. Shortly beyond this point, the trail passes below the
southeast side of the buttresses.
Descent: Escape from the top of the buttresses is not trivial and is described independently for
each feature.
