Eagle Lake Ice

Rocky Mountain National Park

ICE/MIXED

Looking for some Front Range ice without any of the crowds? You’re guaranteed to be alone here due to the extremely long approach. More routes await those in search of new lines, but it may be best to do it as an overnight trip. Approach: Hike up the Wild Basin Trail (Thunder Lake Trail), going past Hidden Falls and Ouzel Falls . Once you reach around 9,800 feet, leave the trail and follow the North Saint Vrain Creek to a tributary that comes out of Eagle Lake. Keep going past Mertensia Falls (see Mertensia Pillar above) up a forested headwall. Bypass a second headwall near tree line and gain Eagle Lake. From here, spy the ice up and left of the lake.
