Fern Canyon

Rocky Mountain National Park

ICE/MIXED
ALPINE

“Fern Canyon” (not an official place name) refers to the short stretch of valley between The Pool and Moraine Park along the Big Thompson River. It is not a great ice climbing venue, but for a single feature. The other routes may never have been noticed, were it not for people hiking in to climb Jaws. Approach: Hike west up the Fern Lake Trail from the winter parking area in Moraine Park (p368). Remember that this is 0.7 miles from the end of the road, and that hiking distances are estimated from the Fern Lake Trailhead. The climbs are listed left to right across the north side of the canyon, opposite the order they are approached.
