Gabletop Mountain (11,939’) is 0.8 miles north of Knobtop Mountain, and 1.5 miles east of Sprague
Pass. The mountain has three ridges and presides over two alpine cirques. The South Ridge curves
around the deep cirque at the head of Tourmaline Gorge, and runs uphill to connect with Knobtop
Mountain. A vast tundra meadow called Bighorn Flats stretches out to the west of the ridge. The long
East Ridge forms the divide between Tourmaline Gorge and an unnamed gorge to the north that
holds Loomis Lake, Spruce Lake, and an unnamed stream that flows into Spruce Creek, 1.2 miles
west of The Pool. Notable features along this ridge include the rock towers just east of the summit,
Tourmaline Spire above Tourmaline Lake, and The Gable above Odessa Lake. The ridgeline continues
its descent northeast between Spruce Lake and Fern Lake where it fans out and fades into the
forested slope above Spruce Canyon. The North Ridge wraps around a dramatic cirque above Loomis
Lake, then descends northeast to Point 10833, and Castle Rock (10,640’), west of Spruce Lake.
Approach: The logical approach to any route on Gabletop Mountain is from the Fern Lake Trailhead
(p368), because it is uphill all the way to the summit. The options: Hike to Odessa Lake (10,020’)
from the Bear Lake Trailhead (9,450’, 4.0 miles) or the Fern Lake Trailhead (8,150’, 4.5 miles). You
loose 700 feet of elevation coming from Bear Lake, but you begin 1,300’ feet higher.
