The north face of Longs lies between the north edge of the Diamond and the Keyhole Ridge (the northwest ridge), and harbors a perennial snowfield called the Dove. Two narrow gullies (the Dove Tails) reach up and left from the center of the snowfield. There are several routes on the north face, most of which were established by guides during the 1930s, when there was a small hotel in the Boulder Field. These routes are seldom climbed with the exception of the North Face (The Cables), and Keyhole Ridge. The immensely popular route called The Keyhole passes through a conspicuous notch of the same name at the extreme right of the north face, then continues around the west and south sides of the peak, to finally reach the summit near the juncture of the southeast ridge. Approach via the East Longs Peak Trail; the north face lies directly above the Boulder Field. It is also possible to reach the north face via the Chasm Lake Trail and The Camel if The Cables route is your goal. All routes on the north face (except The Cables and maybe Ev’s Chimney in late season) requires an ascent of the Dove.
