McHenrys Peak (13,327’) towers above Black Lake at the western extreme of the Black Lake Cirque.
It is one of the few mountains along the Continental Divide in RMNP that is steep enough all around
to actually look like a peak from any perspective. The easiest route on McHenrys Peak is Stoneman
Ridge (the southeast ridge, p???), which is also the easiest descent from the summit.
Approach: For northeast face routes, approach via the Solitude Lake Trail . For all the east
side routes, hike the Glacier Gorge Trail to Black Lake. There are three ways to proceed from
Black Lake:
1.) Follow a rough path around the east side of the lake and pick up a good trail that climbs east and
south along a beautiful cascade. Gain the tundra benches above Black Lake, where cairns lead the
way to a tiny lake below the northeast side of Spearhead. Hike over the north shoulder of Spearhead
and drop down to Frozen Lake. Cross the outlet and follow beautiful terrain to your chosen route.
2.) Hike to the north side of Black Lake, where the outlet passes through some boulders. Cross to
the west side and pick up a faint path that leads through brush and trees. A right branch in the path
is perhaps easier. Either path leads to a talus field on the slope above Black Lake. Hike around to
the west side of the lake and follow a very vague path up the right (west) side of the outlet to Frozen
Lake. Continue as described in Approach 1.
3.) Reach the talus above the west side of the lake as described above. Stay right and pick up a
footpath that climbs along the right edge of a steep grassy meadow. Scramble over a few short rock
steps, then trend left (south) over grassy slopes and talus until beneath the south face of Arrowhead.
This path is fairly disctinct and is marked by cairns.
Descent: Follow Stone Man Ridge (Class 3) back down.
