Mount Copeland
Rocky Mountain National Park
ALPINE
Mount Copeland lies 1.3 miles east of the Continental Divide, and about one mile north-northeast of Elk Tooth. It is a large mountain, similar in shape and size to Thatchtop Mountain above Glacier Gorge . Copeland’s northeast slope rises 3,000 feet above Ouzel Lake and its pinnacled west ridge extends to Cony Pass (12,430’), then climbs abruptly to the Continental Divide at 12,720 feet. The north face is steep and broken and does not provide any obvious line of ascent. The known routes begin from Pear Reservoir to the southeast and Ouzel Lake to the northeast. It appears that the summit could be reached as well from Cony Lake to the southwest, though no such route has been recorded.
Approach: Either begin from the Allenspark Trailhead and hike the Finch Lake Trail to reach Pear Reservoir (6.0 miles) or begin from the Wild Basin Trailhead. Hike the Wild Basin Trail to a junction at 3.1 miles, then follow the Bluebird Lake Trail to where a branch goes left and reachers Ouzel Lake 1.8 miles from the junction.
