Otis Peak

Rocky Mountain National Park

ICE/MIXED
ALPINE

Otis Peak (12,486’) resides along the Continental Divide, roughly midway between Point 12829 and Hallett Peak, and immediately northeast of the Andrews Glacier. The summit is an easy hike from the west and can be reached from an ascent of the Andrews Glacier or from the Flattop Mountain Trail. It is also reasonable to hike up the East Ridge from the vicinity of Lake Haiyaha. East Ridge: A long ridge runs east-northeast from the summit and forms the divide between Andrews Creek and Chaos Canyon. The ridge ends with a scruffy northeast-facing wall between The Loch and Lake Haiyaha that has no record of ascents. The south face of the ridge presents a series of steep buttresses and free-standing towers. Most of these features were unnamed, with no documented routes until recent times, though a few early lines were published for Zowie and Wham (Fricke). That said, one should not be surprised to find old, rusty pitons on any of the routes, including the new ones. Approach: Begin from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead. Hike the Loch Vale Trail to a junction 0.6 miles beyond The Loch. Cross the log bridge over Icy Brook and follow the Andrews Glacier Trail through the forest until it opens into a meadow. The Solar Wall, Zowie and Wham tower directly above the meadow. Loch Vale Pinnacle appears on the skyline to the right. The trail continues up the valley along Andrews Creek, beneath more towers and buttresses, and reaches Andrews Tarn 4.6 miles from Glacier Gorge Trailhead. Descents often require rappels and are described for each feature.
