Pagoda Mountain (13,497’) casts an imposing image at the head of Glacier Gorge, between the
Keyboard of the Winds and Chiefs Head Peak. The first ascent of the mountain is unknown, although
Major Powell’s expedition tried to traverse the peak on August 22, 1868, enroute to Longs Peak,
but were turned back by difficulties on the west ridge. Pagoda has three significant ridges: the south
ridge, the west ridge and the northeast ridge, of which only the latter is customarily climbed unroped
and is likely the line by which the peak was first climbed. See each aspect for approach directions.
