Rock of Ages
Rocky Mountain National Park
TRADITIONAL MIXED PRO
Rock of Ages sits high on the slope above Arch Rocks Campsite. The small buttress at lower left is
easily recognized by a smooth and steep south face covered with pale green lichen. However, the
dauntless individuals who developed the original routes did not limit the name to this lower feature.
Above this 200-foot buttress is a vertical cliff with a sheer, flat south face with some of the best single-
pitch routes in Colorado's Front Range. Immediately left (west) of the buttress is a small, steep
amphitheater of reddish rock, which has two known routes. To the right (east) is a very impressive
buttress with the route Every Pitch Tells a Story. Lastly, down to the right is a sprawling apron with
several large roofs and the route Got to Get Out of This Place.
Approach: From the Fern Lake Trailhead, hike the Fern Lake Trail for a mile to Arch Rocks – house
sized boulders with numerous established problems on them. Just beyond the boulders, look up
and right to find Rock of Ages to the northwest. Scramble up the talus field to the wall. The approach
takes about an hour.
