The Foil is the narrow spire just east of The Saber. Its routes are not recommended for the casual weekend warrior. Approach: Begin from Sky Pond and scramble up talus past bottom of The Saber and into a long gully that climbs below the east side of The Foil. This gully continues all the way to the ridge crest, and also provides a means of descent. Descent 1: To escape from the summit, rappel 85 feet off the north side to a notch, then climb a big dihedral (5.5) to the summit of the prominent tower to the northeast. Down climb the northeast side of the tower to the notch at the top of the approach gully. Hike out via The Gash, or descend the gully, which requires two rappels (40’ and 70’) over chockstones, then hike down to Sky Pond. Descent 2: Southeast Descent Gully. It is perhaps easier to descend the next gully to the east. Part way down, rap 50 feet from an old bolt to clear a chockstone, then continue down to Sky Pond. Descent 3: One may also rappel east into the approach gully and land a short ways above the start to Poc Club: Rappel 85 feet from the summit, then make two more rappels of 160 feet into the gully.
