The Gable (10,920’) is a striking tower, with a long triangular south face, above and north of Odessa
Lake. The Gable is located at the northeast end of a larger, higher massif (11,040) from which it is
separated by a deep notch. The larger massif is somewhat irregular and less appealing, however,
the northeast tower is a beauty.
Approach: Hike to Odessa Lake as described for Little Matterhorn (p384). Start up the path into
Tourmaline Gorge, then break right and head straight north to the bottom of the tower.
Descent: There are various ways to get down from the summit. Down climb (5.5) or rappel off to
the north, then:
1) Down climb the gully between The Gable and the larger massif, and return to the talus field below
the south face.
2) From the easier terrain above the south face (see The Rasp), look for a slung horn down to the
left. Rappel 90 feet to a ledge, then traverse into the gully and scramble down to the bottom of the
tower.
3) Head northwest down a long, rugged slope to a pond in the valley below Loomis Lake. Cross the
stream and pick up a faint path that leads to Spruce Lake. Walk around the north side of the lake
and follow the Spruce Lake Trail to the Fern Lake Trail.
4) Hike down the long northeast ridge to about 9,800 feet, then head east to Fern Lake. Stay near
the crest.
