Mount Ninderry
Australia | SE Queensland | South East Queensland Climbing
SPORT TRADITIONAL
The Dreamtime tale of the Gubbi Gubbi people tells of an epic battle between Ninderry and Coolum, in which Coolum’s head is lobbed off and cast into the sea. The hunchbacked profile of the victorious Ninderry, in modern times, appears as a brooding mass just to the east of the M1 near Yandina. Of interest to climbers are the steep buttresses of rhyolite armour that adorn this petrified warrior. Mount Ninderry offers climbing diversity seldom found at one crag. You can find yourself pumped silly on the steep buckets of Pneumothorax, straining up relentless crimps on Nitroglycerin, confounded by the technical footwork of Enter the Ninja, and donning your bouldering beanie under Raptures of the Deep. Variety is the spice of Ninderry! This isn’t a crag for beginners, but it is a great venue for climbers with a bit of experience. Grade 18/19 delivers, but with over 30 fine lines between 24 and 26, this is a great crag for stretching mind and body into those grades. Brilliant ocean and hinterland views, a dash of exposure, shade any time of the day and the afternoon sea breeze just add to the joy and make Ninderry a wonderful summer playground. Like any crag, many things can kill you at Mt Ninderry. If a loose block doesn’t cave your skull in then the snakes will have you for certain. Loose rock is a risk, though less so than it once was. Wear a helmet and be prudent with the stick-clip. The wildlife is exotic. Snakes are abundant – pythons, browns, blacks, even the odd coastal taipan. Massive hungry bush ticks are very common in the summer. Take a good pair of tweezers (even freeze spray) and wear insect repellent. Mossies are also vicious, particularly in the warmer months around The Cave area. There’s also the rare proliferation of Funnel Web spiders to do battle with! Rest assured that Nambour General Hospital has more antivenines than you can shake a stick-clip at. Falcon nesting occurs between August and November. The following routes are off limits at this time: The Catacombs – Birds of Prey. Ocean Vista Wall – Indi and the Ninja, Indi and the Samurai, One Inch Punch Regardless of the season, please use common sense and if birds become agitated vacate the area and move elsewhere.
