South Seas
The Needles of Rushmore
SPORT TRADITIONAL
This is the area of rock stretching to the E of SD HWY 244 along the NW corner of the park boundary. The park boundary divides the area in half, with the remaining half in the Black Hills National Forest. South Seas host a variety of sport routes ranging from all levels of difficulities. From the entrance of Mt Rushmore National Park, continue NW on SD HWY 244 for 1.5 miles to the NPS boundary sign and park on the E side of the highway (GPS N 43.885929° W -103.467995°) or continue down the road for another 500’ to the Wrinkled Rock Camping Area. Preferably, park at the Wrinkled Rock Camping Area or if full, the eastern pull out on the NW NPS boundary (adjacent to the sign). From Wrinkled Rock follow the nice approach trail S, (initially paralleling the road), it will make a big bend, passing the Western Formations and then gain the old roadbed. From the intersection with the roadbed, follow the roadbed 150’ S to the first formation on your left (Birds’ Nest) From the pull-off, head E on the trail for approx 250’ to intersect the old roadbed and sign-in register. The register is located in the middle of the area.
