The Needles of Rushmore

TRADITIONAL
MIXED PRO

This is the first rock climbing area (west) after the Mt. Rushmore National Memorial Entrance. It is a highly sensitive area due to its proximity to the visitors’ center, ranger station, and the monument. It is recommended to avoid this area during high traffic times. It is comprised of 3 separate major formations (Reardon’s Rock, The Oval Office, and Profile), various minor formations, and boulders. Routes are mostly trad and mixed. Directions: From the entrance of Mt Rushmore National Park, continue NW on SD HWY 244 for 0.5 miles to the parking pullout on the N side of the highway, or slightly further for the south side pullout (GPS N 43.874580° W -103.459000°). The Profile area has a separate parking area; from the entrance of Mt Rushmore National Park, continue NW on SD HWY 244 for 0.7 miles to the signed Washington Profile parking lot (GPS N 43.876183° W -103.460814°). For Reardon’s Rock and The Oval Office, park at either the north or south pullouts. Beware not to park in the employee parking area, located immediately after the ranger station! Profile parking is at the Washington Profile parking lot.
